✨ Why We Celebrate
The Greentree Festival began in 1961 to help replace the trees lost to Dutch elm disease. It has grown into one of Kirkwood’s most treasured traditions, honoring our past while creating joyful moments in the present.
Our mission:
To foster community spirit, celebrate Kirkwood’s heritage, and support our parks through an inclusive, joyful event that brings people together.
From Friday night's Party in the Park to Saturday's Greentree Parade, every moment is a chance to celebrate what makes Kirkwood special—its people.
Rooted in purpose. Growing through tradition.
The Kirkwood Greentree Festival began in 1961—a time of global change and local resilience. Facing environmental challenges like drought and Dutch Elm disease, Mayor Bill Pfitzinger, along with Council Members Robert Reim, Ninian Edwards, and Robert Staed, envisioned a way to restore tree cover and bring neighbors together.
Their solution? A community festival rooted in renewal.
The very first event invited residents to plant trees—Pin Oaks, Sweet Gums, Thornless Locusts, White Birches, and Tulip Trees—offered at affordable prices. Many of those trees still grace Kirkwood’s parks and neighborhoods today, standing as living reminders of the festival’s founding mission: community-powered environmental stewardship.
Over the decades, the Greentree Festival has blossomed into a three-day tradition fueled by volunteers, civic pride, and a shared commitment to connection. With live music, a vibrant parade, dog shows, artisan crafts, food booths, and more, it’s become a signature celebration of Kirkwood’s identity.
🌱 Traditions That Continue to Grow
🎁 Troop 325 Seedling Giveaway
A cherished tradition since the early years, Boy Scout Troop 325 distributes free tree seedlings each year—symbolizing renewal and continuity from generation to generation.
