What to Do If Your Pipes Freeze
Frozen pipes can be a hassle, but knowing what to do can prevent further damage. Follow these steps and tips to address the situation:
Step 1: Shut Off Your Water
Locate your house shut-off valve immediately in case the frozen pipe bursts. It’s typically found on your water service pipeline, right where it enters the basement. If you can shut the water off yourself, it will save time and expense.
If you can’t access your shut-off valve, the Kirkwood Water Department can turn off your water outside in emergencies. Fees apply:
- $25.00 during normal working hours (Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.)
- Minimum $76.00 for overtime callouts (after hours or on holidays).
Step 2: Contact a Plumber
For repairs to frozen or damaged pipes, contact a licensed plumber as soon as possible.
Frozen Pipes Checklist
If you suspect a frozen water pipe or meter, these tips can help you identify and address the issue:
-
Check the Water Flow
- Is water interrupted everywhere in the building or just one location?
- If isolated to one area, check for pipes running through outside walls, attics, or garages, as these areas are more susceptible to freezing.
-
Inspect the Water Meter
- If your meter is outside in a meter pit, ensure the cover is securely in place and undamaged.
- If the cover is ajar or missing, replace it to insulate the meter. You can purchase frames and covers from the Kirkwood Water Department (212 S. Taylor Ave.)—call (314) 984-5936 for pricing.
- To speed up thawing, hang a light bulb in the meter pit to warm the air slowly.
-
Check Insulation
- If your water meter is in a finished basement, ensure it’s insulated.
- Pipes in uninsulated areas like attics, garages, or crawl spaces are prone to freezing. Consider wrapping them with heat tape (check the tape’s functionality regularly).
