Detailed Map-Grants Trail Extension - Phase 2Grant's Trail Extension - Phase 2 [CRP-5502 (617)]

Current Project Status: Engineering Services Proposal Review

CRP- 5502(617) - Grant's Trail Extension, Phase 2

Limits:

In Phase 2 there is one street crossing and one at-grade railroad crossings on the alignment:
1.  Leffingwell Ave (street crossing)- this mid-block crossing will have rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFB), high visibility crosswalk markings, added pedestrian scale lighting on each side of the crossing, and signage.

2.  South Holmes Avenue at Kirkwood Trailhead (at-grade railroad crossing) - the sidepath will cross the 2-track BNSF rail corridor with a travel lane in each direction. There are existing vehicular gates on both sides of the tracks and a sidewalk on the west side of Holmes that will be upgraded for the trail. The existing rail crossing on Holmes is too narrow for the trail to meet the BNSF standards so the project includes replacement of the concrete crossing to provide a 3' buffer from the road and provide the 10' wide side path width. Fencing will be added to control access of sidewalk and trail users onto BNSF right of way. The project does not include replacement of the existing railroad crossing gates.
Green Infrastructure

This project will incorporate Bioswales and Rain Gardens along the greenway trail route to the extent possible within the right of way and grading constraints. These BMP's will help address both water quality and added runoff from the new impervious trail pavement. The project will use native and context sensitive plantings along the entire length of the project.
Bike Network Connectors

The Phase 2 trail is connected to the Kirkwood Bike Network with Phase 1 Calm Street (Neighborhood Greenway) improvements (included in TIP# 7274-24 / Federal Aid No. TAP-5502(616) project. Those improvements are located on Leffingwell south to the Leffingwell/Clinton intersection and then west on Clinton to Filmore Park. A raised crosswalk will be included on the west side of Leffingwell at Clinton to calm traffic. In addition, at Creekside Place, a raised crosswalk will be added to calm traffic and connect the street to Fillmore Park. The Calm Streets connection will provide a connection to the Kirkwood bike Network at the Filmore/Clinton intersection. The bike and sidewalk network provides access to many destinations including the Magic House which is on the Kirkwood Bike Network, less than a block west of the improvements.

South Holmes is also part of the Kirkwood Bike Network, is a Bike St. Louis bike route and is designated on the St Louis County Action Plan for Walking and Biking as a Calm Street. South Holmes is also documented on the Great Rivers Greenway River Ring Network as a facility for the Gravois Greenway and planned to be a Webster-Kirkwood Connector off-street facility.
