Water Dept. - Low Water Pressure

Frequently Asked Questions || Services || Water Home Page ||

Water Rates || General Info ||

§         Is water pressure poor over the entire building, or does it seem to be poor in just one isolated area (one single faucet, sink, shower, etc.).  If pressure is bad all over the building, here are some things you should check before calling the Kirkwood Water Department:

 1)      Check the main water shutoff valve to your building (usually located very near where the water service line enters the building) to be sure the valve is in the fully open position.

 2)      Some customers have a pressure-regulating valve on their water service line (usually located within the first several feet of the pipe just after it enters the building).  This valve may need an adjustment.  The Kirkwood Water Department does not perform this adjustment.

 3)      A sudden drop in pressure or fluctuating pressure over the entire building can indicate that the meter is malfunctioning and may need to be replaced.  Since the City owns and maintains your water meter, please contact us at (314) 984-5936 to make arrangements for meter maintenance personnel to make a service call to replace the water meter and/or perform a low pressure complaint check free of charge.

 4)      A sudden water pressure drop may also indicate a problem with the City’s water distribution system, such as a main break or a fire hydrant being flushed for routine maintenance.  Please contact us at (314) 984-5936 if you experience a sudden drop in your water pressure over the entire building.

§         If you are experiencing low water pressure in just one spot in the building, here is some helpful information:

 1)      Clean out any filters that could be clogged, including faucet screens, shower heads, and washing machine filtering screens.

 2)      An isolated pressure problem within a building indicates a situation with the private plumbing that needs correction.  Since Kirkwood Water Department does not perform repairs on private plumbing, you may need to contact a plumber to assess the problem and perform any necessary repairs.
