Attendance - Committee members, Bliss, Bond, Farris, Knudsen,
Spitzer were present. Staff member - Claire Budd.
Survey Responses - Numerical and percentage tabulations along
with graphs prepared by Farris were reviewed and discussed. The
compilation of all comments prepared by Bond were also reviewed
and discussed. No significant difference was found in responses
by those who had and those who had not attended council, board
and or commission meetings in the last year. Generally answers
to the questions were positive. Current communication tools
given high marks. Responses to questions 9 and 10 were noted..
Suggested Recommendations - Based on survey responses, prior
identification of communication concerns and suggestions the
following first preliminary recommendations were discussed:
. Updating of web site software to include addition of e-mail
capability
. Improve telephone system response capability making it more
user friendly
. Improve communication for emergency situations - reverse
911 system will be tested
. Provide periodic customer service training for all
employees
. Provide annual orientation sessions which include
communication skills component for
all members of the council, boards and commissions
. Place city information kiosks in to central locations
(possibly train depot, station plaza)
. Locate message board in front of city hall
. Conduct periodic information meeting in various locations -
schools, etc.
. Provide and update monthly an information book about the
city to be placed in the
Kirkwood Public Library, Chamber of Commerce, senior citizen
residential facilities
Next Committee Meeting - The committee will meet again on
Wednesday, March 21, at 7:00 p.m. in the lower level conference
room of City Hall.

Committee Purpose/Goals/Outcomes
Purpose - Undertake a review of the city’s communication with
the public.
Goals - . Assist in strengthening and improving communication
between the city and the
public
. Increase understanding of how Kirkwood functions
. Provide a non-threatening avenue for citizens, council, and
officials to
interact for the greater good of Kirkwood.
. Help citizens overcome reluctance to become involved in
community issues
Outcomes - Recommendations to the city related to the purpose
and goals of the project
