Kirkwood Police Explorers Awarded Exploring’s Highest Award -- July 19, 2006

Kirkwood Police Explorer Post 9131 was awarded Exploring’s highest award in a ceremony that took place on June 8.  The award, named for William H. Spurgeon III, is the highest recognition for individuals and organizations contributing significant leadership to the Exploring program. The William H. Spurgeon III Award was developed in 1971 in honor of the man who is regarded as the major leader in the development of special interest Exploring. Mr. Spurgeon, a business executive, personally organized many special interest posts in the 1960's. His pioneering efforts led to the present Exploring program.

The award was bestowed upon the Kirkwood Police Explorer Post because of 20 plus years of service to explorers and the community.  Since its’ inception in 1986, the Post has had more than 160 active explorers who have given over 1000 service hours to the Kirkwood / Oakland community each year.

A great number of Kirkwood Police Explorers have built on their interest in law enforcement and gone on to careers in the field, to include an agent of the United States Secret Service, a Police Chief, several county and municipal Police Officers and Dispatchers, Military Police Officers and Private Security Officers.
