Information
All
business licenses run on a calendar year basis expiring on
December 31st every year.
Business license renewal fees and applications are due
back no later than the last day of February.
Any payment received after the last day of February will
be assessed a late fee of 5% with an additional 1% per month for
every month thereafter (with a maximum penalty fee of 25% for
one year).
Any
person who engages in any business, occupation, pursuit,
profession, calling, avocation or trade within the City limits
of Kirkwood is required to have a business license, unless
specifically exempt by law.
The requirements to obtain a business license vary
depending on the type of business, please review the business
license ordinance Chapter 13 to determine if additional
information is required for your business.
You
may be required to obtain more than one business license.
A separate license is required for each location of your
business in the city.
A separate license is also required for each trade name
under which you operate.
Business licenses are not transferable.
A new license must be obtained when owners, locations or
trade name changes.
In
general when applying for a business license certain
requirements must be fulfilled; such as occupancy permit for any
city location and a Missouri retail sales tax license.
Certain types of businesses may have additional
requirements imposed by city ordinance.
Please
note that these requirements are for a Business License in the
City of Kirkwood only.
Additional requirements may be required by the State for
certain trades or professions.

The
City of Kirkwood may issue a summons to businesses that fail to
pay their taxes or that do not comply with all Ordinances and
regulations of the City of Kirkwood.
The Police Department is responsible for preventing
anyone from carrying on any business activity if they fail to
apply and pay for a license.

* State Law (Section 71.620.2) authorizes the
City of Kirkwood to require an occupational license for
architects and professional engineers if they have an office
within the city limits. But, the City Charter (Article XX,
Section 1) specifically exempts engineers from having a business
license if they are licensed by the state. Fees
