Electric:
The Power Behind Kirkwood Since 1901
Not only has Kirkwood Electric provided reliable power to the
people and businesses of Kirkwood for over a century, it has
also provided critical revenues that fund essential city
services for all Kirkwood citizens. That's the power of Kirkwood
Electric, at work for you every day.
Today,
Kirkwood Electric is working on initiatives that will keep this
city-owned and -operated utility strong long into the future.
That means not only providing reliable, state-of-the-art power,
but also those critical city revenues. Since 1998, Kirkwood
Electric has generated $16.5 million to fund the city services
we rely on every day.
Kirkwood Electric - (314) 822-5842
Kirkwood is the only municipality in the
Greater St. Louis Area which owns and operates both a water distribution system
and an electric distribution system. For Kirkwood customers, this means better service for
hookups, disconnects, and repairs.
The city supplies electricity to about
two-thirds of Kirkwood. The remainder receives service from AmerenUE. Kirkwood has owned
and operated its own electric utility since 1900. It buys electricity from AmerenUE and
distributes it to a population of approximately 25,000 Kirkwood residents. Electric rates are based on costs such as
production and distribution, taxes, and overhead. Customer rates are the same as those
charged by AmerenUE. The benefit to all Kirkwoodians, whether they are served by Kirkwood
Electric or AmerenUE, are the revenues generated by the city operating its own electric
utility. By doing so, the city invests a portion of KE profits into paying for
general city services, such as police and fire protection, snow removal, street
maintenance, and recreation programs.

Public Power Week: October
7-13, 2007
Kirkwood
Electric is celebrating Public Power Week October 7-13 along
with more than 2,000 other electric utilities that collectively
provide electricity on a not-for-profit basis to 44 million
Americans.
“Public Power Week is a chance to highlight Kirkwood
Electric being Kirkwood’s hometown power supplier,” stated Mark
Petty, Kirkwood Electric’s director. “Our crews work day and
night to provide safe, reliable, and low-cost energy with a
focus on customer service and environmental stewardship.”
Public Power Week is a national, annual event sponsored
in conjunction with the American Public Power Association (APPA)
in Washington, D.C. APPA is the service organization for
community- and state-owned electric utilities.
“We are proud to be Kirkwood’s hometown electric
provider,” Petty said. “As a community-owned electric system,
our end goal isn’t just to provide a service to customers, but
to power our neighbors—our community.”
In celebration of Public Power Week, Kirkwood Electric
invites residents to stop by the Kirkwood Farmer’s Market on
Saturday, October 6, from 10 a.m. to Noon to pick up
complimentary bulbs --- FLOWER bulbs!
“Kirkwood Electric is committed not only to continue
our 106-year legacy of quality service to Kirkwood residents and
businesses, but to look for opportunities to improve operations
and better serve the community,” Petty continued.
