Police Explorers

The Kirkwood Police Explorer Post is comprised of young adults, 14-21 years old who have an interest in law enforcement. Most of the explorers in the post are preparing to fulfill a career in some area of law enforcement.

The Kirkwood Police Explorer Post #9131 was formed in 1986 and serves the citizens of Kirkwood and Oakland. The post has three officer advisers and two civilian advisers. Explorers work 20 details each year with about 500 hours, ranging from traffic direction and control to fundraisers.

Kirkwood Police Explorers Awarded Exploring’s Highest Award -- July 19, 2006

Kirkwood Police Explorer Post 9131 was awarded Exploring’s highest award in a ceremony that took place on June 8. The award, named for William H. Spurgeon III, is the highest recognition for individuals and organizations contributing significant leadership to the Exploring program. The William H. Spurgeon III Award was developed in 1971 in honor of the man who is regarded as the major leader in the development of special interest Exploring. Mr. Spurgeon, a business executive, personally organized many special interest posts in the 1960's. His pioneering efforts led to the present Exploring program.

The award was bestowed upon the Kirkwood Police Explorer Post because of 20 plus years of service to explorers and the community. Since its inception in 1986, the Post has had more than 160 active explorers who have given more than 1000 service hours to the Kirkwood and Oakland communities each year.

A great number of Kirkwood Police Explorers have built on their interest in law enforcement and gone on to careers in the field, to include an agent of the United States Secret Service, a Police Chief, several county and municipal Police Officers and Dispatchers, Military Police Officers and Private Security Officers.

Post activities include:

Firearms Training
Ride-a-longs and Dispatch
Assistance to Community Services
Classroom Training
Law Enforcement Demonstrations
Role-Play Scenarios
National Explorer Conferences
Explorer Association Academies
Weekly Meetings
Emergency Situation Call-Outs
