CFL RECYCLING

The City of Kirkwood accepts Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (CFLs) for recycling at the Finance window at City Hall, 139 S. Kirkwood Road, during regular business hours (Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm).  Residents will receive a new CFL bulb for every used CFL that is turned in for recycling.  CFLs should NOT be placed in recycling carts or in regular trash bags for collection.  CFLs are hazardous waste.  Thank you!

STYROFOAM RECYCLING NO LONGER COLLECTED AT SCHEIDEGGER RECYCLING DEPOSITORY

The City will no longer collect or accept Styrofoam at the Scheidegger Recycling Depository, 350 S. Taylor Avenue, effective immediately. Midwest Recycles, the City's Styrofoam hauler, informed the City that it will no longer be able to haul Styrofoam from the Depository and will remove its collection trailer on December 30. This is the decision of the recycler. However, the City is extremely disappointed and will work to find an alternative method to recycle this material.

KIRKWOOD CITIZENS MAKE CURBSIDE RECYCLING A HUGE SUCCESS

CURBSIDE RECYCLING COMES TO KIRKWOOD

Curbside recycling came to Kirkwood in January 2011, and so far, thanks to the participation of the great citizens of this City, it has been an incredible success.

A recent story on the Kirkwood Patch Website told the whole story.

Yard Waste Disposal

In Missouri, municipalities are prohibited from sending yard waste to landfills. Yard waste is defined as: Any garden residue, plant debris, grass, leaves, trees, or brush clippings.

Yard Waste Bags: Yard waste, as defined above, and limbs or brush smaller than six inches in diameter and two feet in length, may be disposed of in City of Kirkwood 30-gallon paper yard waste bags. Bags are available at City Hall at a cost of five bags for $9.25, or $1.85 per bag (tax included) and from several Kirkwood retailers. The cost of the City bag includes collection and disposal. Bags are limited to 50 pounds.  NOTE:  New vendor added!  Local Harvest Grocery (formerly McDonnell’s Market), at 12309 Old Big Bend Road, has signed on with the City to sell Kirkwood yard waste bags.   They are open 8:00 a.m., to 8:00 p.m., every day.

Alternatively: Residents can purchase 30-gallon, generic paper yard waste bags, along with City Yard Waste Stickers, at a cost of $1.50 per sticker. Affix the sticker to the bag and place for collection. The stickers are sold at City Hall and at Ace Hardware in Des Peres. Bags are still limited to 50 pounds.

Bundled Limbs: Bundled limbs and prunings tied with natural fiber twine, with an attached Kirkwood Yard Waste Sticker, can also be placed for collection as yard waste. The bundles may be no longer than three feet or larger than 18 inches in diameter. Individual limbs or prunings within the bundle may not exceed two inches in diameter.

Placement on Day of Collection: Bags and bundled limbs should be placed within three feet of the curb, with the City sticker facing the street, by 6:30 a.m. on the same day that your trash and recycling are collected.  On a week with a holiday when regular trash and recycling collection is moved back by one day, yard waste collection will also be moved back by one day.

Home Composting: This is a natural and inexpensive way to dispose of yard waste. For information about this process, please call 314-822-5828 or pick up a brochure at City Hall.

Christmas Tree Pick-Up: Christmas trees, with all decorations removed, will be picked up at no additional cost with the regular yard waste pick-up in January of each year.

Leaf Disposal: Residents can bag their leaves and place them for yard waste collection, but the Public Works Department also encourages residents to consider using backyard composting to dispose of leaves. A mulching mower used on leaves greatly reduces leaf volume and may eliminate raking. Mulched leaves are also a great natural lawn fertilizer and can be composted in a smaller area or placed in fewer yard waste bags.
