CFL RECYCLING

The City of Kirkwood accepts Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (CFLs) for recycling at the Finance window at City Hall, 139 S. Kirkwood Road, during regular business hours (Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm).  Residents will receive a new CFL bulb for every used CFL that is turned in for recycling.  CFLs should NOT be placed in recycling carts or in regular trash bags for collection.  CFLs are hazardous waste.  Thank you!

STYROFOAM RECYCLING NO LONGER COLLECTED AT SCHEIDEGGER RECYCLING DEPOSITORY

The City will no longer collect or accept Styrofoam at the Scheidegger Recycling Depository, 350 S. Taylor Avenue, effective immediately. Midwest Recycles, the City's Styrofoam hauler, informed the City that it will no longer be able to haul Styrofoam from the Depository and will remove its collection trailer on December 30. This is the decision of the recycler. However, the City is extremely disappointed and will work to find an alternative method to recycle this material.

KIRKWOOD CITIZENS MAKE CURBSIDE RECYCLING A HUGE SUCCESS

CURBSIDE RECYCLING COMES TO KIRKWOOD

Curbside recycling came to Kirkwood in January 2011, and so far, thanks to the participation of the great citizens of this City, it has been an incredible success.

A recent story on the Kirkwood Patch Website told the whole story.

Cost and Service

Kirkwood provides curbside sanitation service for $17.06 per month.  All trash, recycling, and yard waste are collected on one single day each week.  Click here to determine on which day of the week your trash will be collected.   The service includes up to five bags placed at the curb.

The monthly rate includes 50 bags delivered each year in August to all curbside customers. Bags and throw-away containers are limited to 35 gallon bags and a weight of less than 50 pounds.

Please note:  Other than the City-provided recycling cart, any container placed at the curb will be removed as trash and not returned.

Basic service does not include loose building materials, such as lumber, dry wall, railroad ties, or carpeting. Pick up of leaves, grass clippings, garden residue, limbs, or brush is not included in the basic residential service.

Collection Time

Trash should be placed at the curb by 6:30 a.m. of the scheduled pick up day, but no earlier than dusk on the previous evening.

Bag Delivery

The Sanitation Division delivers one roll of 50 bags to each curbside customer in August. For your convenience, additional bags are available at City Hall for $7.00 (tax included) per roll of 50 bags.

Special Pick Up -- Large Volumes

This service is provided on a user-fee basis and not included in the residential service.

A fee of $20 is charged for each major appliance, large furniture item, tire or truck hopper load (3' x 3' x 6' - 2 cubic yards - not compacted) of miscellaneous items. To schedule a special pick up, call 822-5828 or click here to email your request before noon of the day before your regularly scheduled sanitation pick-up.  Please note if making your request by email: Your request has not been scheduled until you receive a confirmation email from the city.

Special pick up service cannot include concrete, bricks, dirt, rocks, limbs, yard waste, or brush. Railroad ties must be cut into three foot lengths.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: I have some electronics I need to recycle.  How do I do that?  A:  Click here for a copy of the City's Recycling Guide, which provides a list of local companies that recycle electronics.  Additionally, there are local electronics recycling events throughout the year, and we will post those on this page as they are announced.  Click here for the WITS Website and a list of their ongoing electronics drives throughout the year.

Q:  I have some old paint I need to dispose of.  Can I put it out with my trash?  A:  If the paint is latex AND dried out, you can put it out with your trash.  To dry out paint, leave it open for a while or add cat litter.  The City of Kirkwood does not accept non-latex paint for collection, but Saint Louis County does have a hazardous waste collection program (see "Hazardous Waste" above).

Q. When I run out of  the black trash bags the City delivers, do I have to buy more of these, or can I use any plastic trash bag?  A.  Great question.  YES, you can use any kind of plastic trash bag you want.  You are not required to use the Kirkwood-issued black bags.  We used to require that, but no longer.  However, no matter what kind - or SIZE - of bag you use, you can still only place FIVE bags out at the curb on your collection day.  If you buy a smaller bag, you can't put more than five bags out, so you may want to buy a size large enough to fit all your trash.
