City of Kirkwood Fire
Department
Participates In Live Fire Training
January 9 and 10
Kirkwood,
MO -- Tuesday, January 08, 2008 --
The City of Kirkwood Fire Department will be using the
city-owned residential structure at 571 W. Monroe (Kirkwood Park
near the Aquatic Center) for training on January 9 and 10. The
structure is scheduled demolition in the very near future. The
department will use the structure for “live fire” training,
which means that crews will build fires inside the structure to
practice firefighting techniques. All training activities will
adhere to the safety guidelines and practices established by the
National Fire Protection Association for this type of training.
The fires will be created with oak pallets and straw because
they burn predictably and generate minimal smoke with no
synthetic or hydrocarbon based toxins. Firefighters will enter
the building and encounter realistic heat and smoke conditions.
They will practice a variety of search and rescue and fire
extinguishment techniques in a controlled “live fire”
environment. This evolution will be repeated several times
each day with training hours each day from approximately 10 a.m.
to 3 p.m. This house is located in an ideal spot since it is
away from neighboring structures and on a relatively low traffic
street. Neighbors have been informed of the upcoming training.
St. Peter Cemetery was contacted to ensure that no burials are
scheduled during the training hours.
