City of Kirkwood Receives
“Certificate of Excellence”
for
Environment Efforts in Storm
Water Quality
Kirkwood, Missouri -- Thursday, October 18, 2007 -- The
City of Kirkwood has received a “Certificate of Excellence” from
the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) for
environmental efforts in storm water quality. The Certificate
honors “achievement in implementation of goals in the St. Louis
County Phase II Storm Water Management Plan.”
In cooperation with 59 other municipalities and St. Louis
County, with MSD as the coordinating authority, the City of
Kirkwood obtained a storm water discharge permit from the
Department of Natural Resources. This permit is required under
the EPA Storm Water Phase II Regulations and requires Kirkwood
to develop and implement an operational and maintenance
management plan. The ultimate goal is to prevent or reduce
reducing pollutant storm water runoff.
To meet this goal, Kirkwood has implemented “Best Management
Practices,” which include proper storage and disposal of all
hazardous materials, training in material-handling for all
employees involved in maintenance or construction, and learning
waste/spill clean-up procedures. Examples of Best Management
Practices include covered salt storage, frequent street
sweeping, siltation control at construction sites, volunteer
stream clean ups, storm culvert cleaning, and recycling.
Todd Rehg, Assistant Director of Public Works, has implemented
and overseen Kirkwood’s pollution-reduction practices and
presented the certificate to the entire City Council at their
meeting on Thursday, October 18, 2007. “We appreciate the
Certificate of Excellence from MSD,” said Rehg. “It’s always
rewarding when the extra efforts of Kirkwood employees are
recognized.”
