Kirkwood Electric Celebrates Public Power Week

October 7-13, 2007

Kirkwood, Missouri -- Friday, September 21, 2007 – Kirkwood Electric is celebrating Public Power Week October 7-13 along with more than 2,000 other electric utilities that collectively provide electricity on a not-for-profit basis to 44 million Americans.

“Public Power Week is a chance to highlight Kirkwood Electric being Kirkwood’s hometown power supplier,” stated Mark Petty, Kirkwood Electric’s director. “Our crews work day and night to provide safe, reliable, and low-cost energy with a focus on customer service and environmental stewardship.”

Public Power Week is a national, annual event sponsored in conjunction with the American Public Power Association (APPA) in Washington, D.C.  APPA is the service organization for community- and state-owned electric utilities.

“We are proud to be Kirkwood’s hometown electric provider,” Petty said.  “As a community-owned electric system, our end goal isn’t just to provide a service to customers, but to power our neighbors—our community.”

In celebration of Public Power Week, Kirkwood Electric invites residents to stop by the Kirkwood Farmer’s Market on Saturday, October 6, from 10 a.m. to Noon to pick up complimentary bulbs --- FLOWER bulbs!

“Kirkwood Electric is committed not only to continue our 106-year legacy of quality service to Kirkwood residents and businesses, but to look for opportunities to improve operations and better serve the community,” Petty continued.

Kirkwood Electric was created in 1901.  Today, it has 20 employees who maintain six substations, 5,500 poles, 1,833 transformers, and over 132 miles of distribution lines to serve Kirkwood Electric’s 10,000 residential and commercial customers. This breaks downs to 80 customers per mile of distribution line, which is more than double the average for municipal utilities.
