Neighbors Help Neighbors With
Assessments
Kirkwood, Missouri – April 20, 2007 – Kirkwood residents
willing to volunteer their time to help other residents
understand St. Louis County’s re-assessment process, state tax
breaks for seniors and disabled residents, and how to appeal an
assessment that doesn’t reflect market value, recently sat down
for some training with St. Louis County Property Owner Advocate
Mary King. “When we heard about the volume of calls the County
was receiving and how fast the informal conferences were filling
up, we started looking for ways to help our residents,” said
Georgia Ragland, assistant chief administrative officer for the
City of Kirkwood.
While informal conferences with the County Assessor’s Office
have filled up, the good news is that property owners do not
need to participate in an informal conference before appealing
to the Board of Equalization. Appeal forms can be filed with the
Board through June 18, 2007, and hearings will be heard by the
Board between June 4 and July 31, 2007.
Kirkwood residents interested in learning more about assessments
and their personal options can call 822-5892 and leave their
contact information. One of Kirkwood’s trained volunteers will
contact them and see what they can do to help. In some cases it
may be as simple as mailing them one of several County brochures
that have been developed to address various assessment issues.
For others with little or no computer skills, they may need to
make an appointment and bring in their assessment notice so the
volunteer can go over it with them and help them look up
information on comparables on the Department of Revenue’s web
site
http://revenue.stlouisco.com.
