Council Agrees To Hold
Proposition C To $2M Needed
To Restore Critical Funding For City –
Action called “responsible
and accountable” on behalf of
citizens
Kirkwood,
Missouri – April 5, 2007 –
In response
to rising county reassessments, City Council Thursday night
agreed to protect Kirkwood taxpayers by limiting the revenues
that would be generated by Proposition C. The proposition was
placed on the June 5 ballot to provide funds needed for core
city services, including police, fire and paramedics.
“Proposition
C was designed to generate $2 million of revenue in year one;
that's what we need and what we should ask of the citizens of
Kirkwood --- no more, no less,” stated Mike Brown, Kirkwood
Chief Administrative Officer, noting that his recommendation was
based on input from staff and the Citizens Finance Committee.
As a result
of Council’s agreement, in August, when tax rates for the coming
year are set, Proposition C’s rate would be set lower than 34
cents in order to generate only $2 million.
“Quite
frankly, because of reassessments it's very difficult to make
accurate revenue projections at this point. The county won't
have real data for us to work with until summer, even though we
have requested it,” said Brown.
Noting the
urgent needs within the city, Mayor Mike Swoboda stated, “We can
take this step now to protect our taxpayers while still
adequately funding core city services. This is the responsible,
accountable action to take on behalf of the citizens of
Kirkwood.”
