 “Favorite Buildings in Kirkwood”
Recognition Awards

Kirkwood, Missouri -- February 18, 2007 -- May is Preservation Month, providing the perfect time to show how your community’s history honors the past and helps build the future

Architecture makes visible the values that a community holds.  When architectural treasures are saved, the effect on civic spirit often surpasses the importance of the structures themselves.

Nominations are currently being sought for “Favorite Buildings in Kirkwood.”  Buildings or places need not be a “designated” Kirkwood Landmark.  The members of the Kirkwood Landmarks Commission shall review all nominations to select this year’s recipients.  “Recognition Awards” shall be announced during Preservation Month, May 9th.

The Landmarks Commission encourages nominations of buildings that are deserving of recognition because they contribute to the visual character of the Kirkwood architectural community.  These cultural features are revered by citizens and visitors alike.  A residential or commercial building may be nominated for its:

Quality restoration to its former glory.

Maintenance or improvement through landscaping or cosmetic treatment, which reinforces its historic character.

Sensitive new addition outside the existing envelope of the original structure.  This new construction acknowledges the quality of character of the original by relating to it through use of scale, proportion, and/or textures and materials.

Comfortable fit into the existing character of its neighborhood.  This good neighbor does not subordinate his neighbors, but like a good addition, finds compatibility through use of scale, proportion, materials, textures, and details.

The Commission will also give an award for a “neighborhood of distinction,” an area of architectural significance and character that has maintained its integrity for 50 years of more.

Further information and nomination forms can be found online:
